community table

The community table at Lee and Me really does build community. I have now met and befriended 2 new people as a result of dining/working/loitering at the community table. The first is a girl called Jess who often comes on her own to study at the community table (no, she's not my imaginary twin, she is real, but yes it is a little uncanny). We see each other in there every few days, and we talk about our lives and food and whatever we're working on at the time. Today she talked about her negative impression of church based on her Catholic schooling, and how she thinks churches should do more to appeal to the community around them, especially young people. I agreed, and we had a good conversation about God and how sometimes churches, despite good intentions, can be barriers that make it hard for people to see God. Good chat.

My second community table friend I only met today. I met the trumpet player from the gig last night, who also happened to be the guy that did the jazz arrangements of Peter Sculthorpe's pieces. It was just me and him and his partner at the table, and I overheard them debriefing about last night's gig, so I introduced myself and we all got talking. It was very pleasant, and I felt bonded to my Lee and Me community. Bringing people together. That should be their slogan. But I think someone else has already taken it.
