While most people are horrified at the hole-in-the-wall that is my office, I've grown quite fond of it over the years. It's kind of like an annoying friend who deep down you really love. It has some oddities about it (you get the feeling this particular hole-in-the-wall was an afterthought), and one of these oddities is a triangle shaped "column" right beside my desk. My theory is that it is hollow, because it always sounds like there's something going on inside, but really there's something going on upstairs on the floor above me, and the sound travels down through the column.
Today, what they happen to be doing upstairs is drilling. It must be right above my desk, but it sounds like it's right next to me because of this column. They've been drilling for over 3 hours. There has been some intermittent tapping. But mostly drilling. There's a big hole in the wall somewhere on Level 2. And it hasn't made for a particularly peaceful or productive afternoon, I'm afraid. Rob got jack of it and went home about half an hour ago. I'm trying to persist.
Once there was the sound of running water in this column for days and days. It almost drove me round the twist. I hope the drilling doesn't last that long.
